The production process of our shoes

As you know we produce our shoes in Portugal. After telling you about our workshops in Porto, we decided to explain the production process of our shoes.

Today, we are bringing you in our small workshops in Porto where all our shoes are made. Discover the production processs. See how your favorite boots ended up at your feet ! We will detail each manufacturing step and show you by what processes a pair of shoes is born.

The drawing

It all starts with the ideas of Marie, the creator, which are born day by day and take shape gradually. It is from this kind of drawing that we create a design on software. The measurements are then transmitted to the workshop, which will follow its specifications throughout the manufacture of the shoes.

The choice of materials

When it comes to choosing the materials, everyone puts their hands to the dough at Minuit sur Terre (even Cannelle). We then choose from hundreds of materials found in salons and those we are used to. We discuss, exchange, rework, test … Until we find the perfect combination for a pair. We like to look at more original materials such as glitter lamés, prints or all the accessories we can think of !

Prototyping

This steps is very important in the production process. The pattern maker draws the shoe. Either on the form (a kind of very solid plastic shoe tree which serves as “base” to put the shoe in volume), or on the material. He materializes all the necessary information such as the seams, the filled , perforations and so on. It is important to take into account both compliance with the basic design but also the comfort requirements of a shoe (opening wide enough to retract the foot for example). We then obtain the patterns of the different parts of the shoe.

Cutting the material

Once the prototype is ready, it’s time to move on to manufacturing ! The first step is to cut out of the materials all the pieces that will be needed for each pair. We can use a punch, like here for our soles. And, for some more robotized factories, it’s a laser machine that cuts shapes !

The assembly

Once all the parts have been cut, they will be assembled to form the top of the shoe. This step is called stitching. The pieces are sewn together on the plastic shapes (the mold from the start). It is therefore necessary to trim the material : reduce the thickness at the level of the connections to obtain a finer result. Then, we can proceed to the filling : the edge is folded then glued and sewn to have a more aesthetic finish. Once assembled, this shape becomes the stem.

Assembly and sole sealing

This step consists in putting the rod in place on the form thanks to the stiffener which keeps the heel in place. The upper is then fixed at the level of the sole. And here is the shoe finally put together in volume ! Now is the time to put on a sole, what do you think ? Cut out with a punch, the sole is glued to the shoe.

The finishing touches

Last step of the production process. It is at this stage that we add the eyelets, the laces … There are also lots of little details to settle like burning the wires that stick out, or adding the bridle ! Then, they are wrapped in their pretty paper, then put in the boxes before joining us in Bordeaux and finishing at your feet 🙂
