Zero waste, a way to save the planet

We are more and more aware of plastic pollution which damages environment and our health. Documentaries and reports show us the devastating impact that our consumption of single-use plastic has on the planet.

With the huge quantities of waste that our societies throw every day in nature, we necessarily want to act. But where to start ? Other than choosing a minimalist lifestyle, starting a zero waste approach is a good solution. Although it can seem complicated and a little insurmountable, when we have not taken the right reflexes, yet it is easy to put in place. We guide you for your first steps to a zero waste lifestyle !

1 – Invest in a reusable bottle

First key step when you want to reduce your daily waste is to buy a water bottle ! In fact, tap water is completely drinkable and not harmful to health. It also generates far less plastic pollution than buying bottles of mineral water. If you want to purify it, you can even choose natural solutions like charcoal or ceramic beads.

It’s now more easy to find pretty flaks. Prefer them in glass or stainless steel so that they are completely harmless for health. Check out Gaspajoe for some dope ones. Some even allow you to keep your water cool !

2 – Choose solid cosmetics

A good way to get started with zero waste is to start making changes in you bathroom. Indeed, testing solid cosmetics is quite fun ! Progress is quickly visible because it is quite simple to reduce your waste in the bathroom. And if you want to roll up your sleeves, you can even make your own recipes, by making your own deodorant for example !

A mix of solutions that you can adopt in the bathroom are using a bamboo toothbrush, washable cottons, shampoo, deodorant and solid toothpaste, oriculi, menstrual cup, washable sanitary napkins, safety razor … There are many alternatives to go zero plastic in the bathroom ! Many brands that offer solid cosmetics are vegan and their products have impeccable compositions, such as Lamazuna or Pachamamaï.

3 – To reduce your wastes, buy groceries in bulk

Another alternative to plastic, but this time in the kitchen is to buy in bulk ! Whether in organic stores or specialized shops, this mode of consumption is spreading more and more. The principle is simple : bring your reusable containers or bags, take the quantity you want and then pay by weight.

There are now very easily small bags made of light and easily transportable fabrics which make it possible not to come shopping with your jars (otherwise it would be far too heavy). We can also adopt these good habits for fruits and vegetables and no longer use plastic bags offered on the shelves.

Buying dry products in bulk (rice, pasta, cereals, coffee, seeds, etc.) and fruits and vegetables can greatly reduce waste in the kitchen. In addition, it’s pretty : when you come home from shopping, you just have to transfer everything to jars to have a nice kitchen !

4 – Go for natural cleaning products

To reduce your waste at home, the ideal is also to switch to natural cleaning. It is also good for your health ! You will easily find on the internet recipes for preparing your laundry very quickly and easily, as well as your all-purpose cleaners. For the most part, you only need a few very simple ingredients: Marseille soap, white vinegar and baking soda.

It is quite simple to do without certain products which are considered essential, but which are not so essential. Replace the paper towels with cloth towels, or even the paper towel with tea towels and a sponge. Simple right ?

5 – Think reutilization !

When you end up with future waste, you might as well make it live longer before throwing it in the trash ! You can for example reuse your cardboard boxes to send future ones, your pretty Minuit sur Terre shoe boxes for storage, your vegetable paper bags next time you go to the supermarket … It works as well for pretty papers that you can keep to wrap your next gifts. Printed papers can become drafts, just like race tickets which can serve as reminders … The possibilities are endless !

6 – It take a bit of organization to reduce your trash

Let’s be real : we often know about all these zero waste solutions. The hardest part is to show a little organization.

In fact, you quickly get fooled when you haven’t prepared your lunch and are forced to buy a salad or sandwich under plastic during the lunch break, or even when you forgot your bags to bulk and or you water bottle… The best way to respond to these problems and to have a small zero waste kit in your handbag, such as: fabric bags, a tissue towel, a tote bag, a flask and a reusable straw. With that, we are ready for any eventuality !
