10 tips for green travel

| Emma

Ah, finally, the holidays! Choosing an eco-friendly destination is good, but adopting the right gestures during your trip is even better! There are many ways to travel green and it starts with the way you plan your trip. Your choice of transport, activities and even accommodation all play a part.

It is possible to combine holidays and environmental protection! We tell you how!

1) Find out about the destination

Before you leave, find out about the country of destination. Find out about sanitary conditions and the shops available on site to avoid cluttering up with superfluous items.

Try to find out more about the measures ecofriendly, to choose countries that are involved in environmental protection. Find out about places, protected species, environmentally friendly tours and visits.

2) Choose an accommodation ecofriendly

Green travel also means choosing the right accommodation. If you are looking for holiday accommodation, avoid large hotels. Choose youth hostels or, even better, homestays. This way you can be sure to limit your impact ecofriendly.

Search the internet for traveller blogs, join Facebook groups for answers or contact tourist offices for reliable information.

3) Avoid flying as much as possible

Travelling always involves a mode of transport. The faster the mode of transport you use, the more carbon it releases

The plane emits more than 350 grams of CO ² per kilometre and per passenger.
Cars emit half as much CO ².
Buses emit four times less CO ² than planes.
The train, which emits 35 times less CO ² than a plane!

To travel ecologically, always use the train and bus, the most environmentally friendly means of transport. Once there, avoid taking a taxi. The bus, train or, better still, the bicycle, will allow you to travel without harming the environment. What's more, these means of transport are cheaper and sometimes faster than a car journey, as they often avoid traffic jams.

Yes, we know it's not always possible to avoid the car. If you find yourself in this situation :

  • Carpooling is a good way to reduce the amount of CO ² emitted into the atmosphere. ecofriendly Carpooling is also economical.
  • Minimise the environmental impact of your car journey by not overusing the air conditioning, which increases fuel consumption by 15-20%.
  • Avoid motorways and use smaller national roads instead.

4) Travel light!

This is often the hardest part of travelling: not taking your entire wardrobe with you. To travel light:

  • Take a smaller suitcase/bag
  • Choose technical, comfortable clothing that can be used for several occasions
  • Favour solid soaps, shampoos and toothpaste
  • Depending on the length of your trip, plan the outfits day by day in advance and think about the possible combinations with each garment.
  • And to be eco-friendly right down to the tips of your feet, two pairs of vegan shoes: one pair of sneakers for long walks and a pair of sandals to let your feet breathe.

5) Eating local products

It is a fact thateating locally reduces pollution. Choose local restaurants: you will discover specialities and save money. Isn't that nice?

Buying local is one of the most committed and sensible actions when travelling. Not only will it have an impact on the environment but also on the economy of the country you are visiting.

Focus on the market

For shopping, the market is the best way to buy seasonal and locally grown produce.

The shops

While walking around the market you can meet people to ask questions about specific shops. For example, organic shops, artisanal bakeries, farmers' groups, etc. All of this will not only help you make good choices but also help you discover new things.

6) Eat less animal products

In France and in Europe, the regulations on the origin of animal products are quite clear. It is rather easy to obtain information. However, this is not always the case abroad.

By eating meat abroad you run the risk of getting sick or eating food you don't want to eat. In addition, eating meat contributes to over 20% of greenhouse gas emissions.

7) Zero waste kit

To reduce the weight of your luggage, travel with the bare essentials. Prepare a "zero waste kit", which will help you to reduce your waste and thus reduce your impact ecofriendly.

Remember to bring :

  • A fabric bag containing: 2 fabric napkins, 2 stainless steel straws, 1 bulk net, 1 shopping bag, 1 retractable silicone cup,
  • solid shampoo,
  • a solid soap,
  • a bamboo toothbrush,
  • Reusable make-up removal pads,
  • a homemade toothpaste made from baking soda, coconut oil and lemon,
  • a solid homemade deodorant,
  • a solid balm to relieve soreness.

8. Buy a water bottle

This is certainly the most accessible and easiest trick to pull off. No need to buy bottles of mineral water on every street corner. If you are travelling to a country where you are not sure of the availability of drinking water, opt for a filtering bottle.

9. Choose your sun cream carefully

Ordinary sunscreens are harmful to the environment. There are a lot of responsible sunscreens that do not pollute. It is very important to choose them over more common brands. Choosing a vegan sunscreen is the right choice for you and for the planet.

10) Engage in responsible activities

Ethical tourism is a growing concern in our society. When travelling, we often realise that animals are not treated well in all countries.

So avoid as much as possible participating in activities that highlight animal abuse. If you want to travel ecologically and responsibly, prefer places where animals are treated well, avoid those where they are staged (circuses, aquatic animal shows such as orcas or dolphins). To combine business with pleasure, think about eco-friendly museums.

Yes, this may seem difficult to do when you just want to go on holiday to enjoy. But by making a few efforts and preparing your holiday well in advance you can combine pleasure and ecology without any problem. Green travel is not that difficult!

Have a good holiday!
